I've heard that Canon cameras are good, but is it really true?
I'm thinking about getting this Canon camera:

Should I? Would the pictures be good for editing? Is there another Canon that would be better for picture editing?

Yes, Canon makes good cameras. So do a lot of other makers. I have never used this camera, but all the user reviews I read said people who owned it liked it. Here is a review from a member of our forum http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=965.
It should be fine for picture editing.

Hey I really like all the canon camera's that I have used so far. I personally own the SD 800 IS which I think is a great camera. It's been really great so far, I have had it for about 5 - 6 months now and I use it all the time. Had no problems with it whatsoever.
Take care
If you look on Flickr, you will see that you can search for pictures taken by particular cameras (http://www.flickr.com/cameras/). It won't tell you what it feels like to hold the camera or how you will get on with the controls but will give a clue of what it is capable of (although, to be honest, in skillful hands most cameras will yield excellent results).

Try to consider A710 IS as well. It's a pretty decent camera

I have the sd630 and its a great camera....feature loaded and takes nice pics. The only complaint i have with all my canons are the LCDs are a bit decieving. I feel the actual pictures are almost always a bit more developed than the screen shows. Not in a bad way but I have taken multiple shots when i really didnt need to cause the contrast and color are a bit muted on the screen.
I bought a ixus 850 IS for my gf last summer. i would say this camera is a very well built camera & a solid performer too. As I know , the Ixus line are famous for their solid build & good pic quality. go for it i think. It won go wrong with Canon's Ixus line. :)

Wow. That was a great review. After reading that, I might actually buy it now, unless I find something "better." Haha. Thank you!!!

...for what it's worth, I started on Nikons (film) but then when everything went digi (sorry, purists) I bought a Canon A5 (900 pixel digital) then an Ixus 300 (2mp) then a Canon powershot Pro 1 (8mp) then a Canon 30D (8mp DSLR) and a Canon Ixus 65 (6mp, no view finder) ...my wife has an Ixus 40 and I have an Ixus 400 at work... I like canon :) they work very well. s

I love the quality of Canons too and would like to get a canon point and shoot for all those places you don't want to take your slr, like spelunking or whitewater rafting and their underwater housings are much cheaper.
Which Canon point and shoot would you recommend?

aries67, Welcome
This link will take you to the Flickr site, which features a long list of Canon's used by contributors, in order of popularity and usage. You can sample the quality of photographs taken by your choice, too.

I can't compare the SD 600 to the SD 800 IS that I bought for my wife for a recent trip. I selected it for her because it has a 28mm (equivalent) wide end and the 105 mm (equiv) on the long end is all she needs. There are very few digicams with a 28mm wide end and both a viewfinder and LCD.
For some (not my wife) the downside could be that it is not able to be operated manually...like other Powershot SDs.
We were shooting side-by-side often and on a couple of occasions her shot had better focus than my 5D with a 35/L (I have no idea how I did it, but obviously I didn't confirm focus.)
I miss the tilt/swivel LCD of the Pro1 and the A95, but otherwise I think the new SD series is great for beginners.

Take my comments with a grain of salt, as I'm a true Canonphile. It started back in the early 1970s with an FTbn and it has proceeded in the digital era from a G1 to a 1DMKIII (on order.)
