I am currently travelling on a round-the-world trip. As photography wasn't the main focus of this trip - although I'm getting into it more and more, I decided not to take my tripod and try to keep my gear lighter and less cumbersome.
I've since purchased a Gorillapod and wanted to recommend it to others. There's so many palces where you get a fence or a tree and not a flat surface to be able to use a traditional mini tripod. It supports my Canon EOS 300D with a small lense (not with the 75-300) and has been useful for loads of extra low light shots. I'm even confident enough now to mount it on fences over water !!!
Hope it helps you guys like it's helped me if you are trying to compromise your gear whilst travelling!!
