Hello guys,
Ive been having this problem lately, I started into photography a few months ago and have been taking shots ever since, my current gear is a canon powershot and I take it everywhere I go, a few months ago, if I would see a subject that I liked I would just shoot away, sometimes I get a good shot, but lately whenever I see a subject I like to shoot and when I start to compose the shot I always find myself irritated by something, either something out of place, or something distracting in the background, etc etc, sometimes i'd take the shot anyway but lately Im finding myself not taking the shot at all. I fear that im might be too "nit-picky" about small things and that it might lead me pictureless...
Another thing, Im getting tired of taking pictures with the same compositions... like flower in the 1/3 of the composition, or sunset with the horizon on the 3rd line... yada yada...
Im in a photo block, any help would be very very appreciated :P

Here's a thread that I started just about this very topic: Where do you go for inspiration? (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=25)
There are some really good ideas in there from people about how to get out of a photo block. :) Mostly it's just about getting some form of inspiration.

As to being too picky, well, only you can answer if you're being too picky, but it's just digital, and if you take a shot you later think is bad, the delete button doesn't cost you a thing, so try not to worry so much about whether everything is just perfect and just shoot (easier said than done ;))

Interesting that you mention this. I've suddenly noticed quite how many people will parrot something about the rule of thirds as their first response to a photo and it makes me think all the soul of capturing a moment is getting drowned out by cookie cutter proscriptives. Guidelines for good composition are massively useful and it's great that we're familiar with them, but you can make a stunning picture that doesn't adhere to any of them, just like you can write a great sentence that starts with the word 'and'.

As for getting over your block, all you have to do is click. Just hold out your camera, don't even bother glancing at the screen and click. Then click again. And again. And again. Run around clicking, fall down clicking, jump up clicking - just go nuts. Fill up your memory card like that and I guarantee you'll find something you like.

And it might just spark an idea...:)
