Usually I use this method to photograph cut flowers, but here I have applied it to a couple of Christmas ornaments.
I use a background of black material. Here I used a black sweat fleece from a fabric store. Any black that does not reflect light is good. The ornaments are suspended with a dark thread but anything can be used and cloned brushed out in a photo editor. I used a cereal behind the subject for the backdrop support. Place the drop as far as you can behind the subject and use the smallest aperture so that the black will not be focused in.
I captured with a 30D, 17-85 EFS telephoto lens, tripod, remote release and used natural light from a window across the room. Exposure time was around 4 seconds. When shooting flowers, I use a homemade diffuser, this gives the flowers a softer light. This is also good for jewelry and any small bright objects. Depending on whatever, a white background works also.

Hmmm, good quick and easy way for a black background, and those look really good. :)

This is a very neat approach. I especially like how you have eliminated any possibility of shadow.:)
