One of the biggest losses, in my opinion, in moving from the Flickr group to this forum setup is the RSS feeds. With Flickr, I subscribed to the group and I would receive every posting made to the group, photos, replies, everything. With this forum setup (having found the links hidden in the FAQ), I have to subscribe to each forum separately (not that big an issue), but the RSS feed is only for the first post to a thread, no replies.
Unless I'm missing something, but as it stands the forums are too much work to actively participate in, and have become more of "well if I have a minute maybe I'll click the New Posts button and see if anything catches my eye".
I hope there is some other solution, as I have enjoyed seeing people's pictures posted here, and the discussions they start.

Thank you.

Shawn, you may check the board a few more posts down: http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=184
that gives some information at least.

The only other option I see is also going under the "User CP" and selecting the Options, in there you can setup a default subscription type for threads that you have started or replied to as well. Then you only have to manualy change the ones that you want to just lurk.

Hi Seltzer, I did check out that thread before starting this thread. It appears to point to the RSS feeds for the blog (which I am subscribed to), but doesn't mention anything about the forums.
I've looked around in "User CP", but all I've seen is subscribing to threads not entire forums. I will look again though incase I've missed something.

Thanks for the reply.

I find that a forum like this generates too much traffic to stay on top of even with an RSS feed. In fact, it would tend to swamp the rest of my feeds, which tend to post no more than once or twice a day.

What I do is check in via a link that takes me straight to recent updates (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/search.php?do=getnew).

FWIW, I found the traffic volume on the Flickr group on the high side as well - it does make it harder to keep up with everything (unless it is one of very few sites you follow) but the active community means it is much more likely that you will get useful answers to your questions and stumble across interesting new ideas.

I agree with Wulf. So many new topics each day it will clutter my rss reader.
For these kind of forums I use the "new posts" link at the top of the board. Then I scan throught the posts and read the ones that look interesting..and that is why it is important that the title of a post should be telling what the post is about...
