I think we should not judge the sony lenses after the kit lenses. There is a wide range of new lenses released by sony (http://www.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProductCategory.action?site=odw_en_GB&category=DAC+Digital+SLR+Alpha+Lenses) and almost no reviews on them so far. I have an alpha 200 and I'm also not particularrily impressed with the kit lenses (18-70mm). Howeve, I'm looking to buy some new lenses, particularily macro lenses and I was not able to find any reviews on any of the new sony lenses. Please share on this thread any information/experience/reviews of the new sony lenses.

The Sony kit lenses are as good as the kit lenses for the Nikon and Canon systems. But you're right, there is better glass out there.
The Sony lenses are, if I may make a broad generalisation, on the expensive side. This may be due to the relative newness of the range. You can opt for the older Konica-Minolta lenses that share the same mount, some of which can be had for a good price.

i agree with the OP, i want to buy either a 18-200 mm or a 50 mm lense but haven't found any reviews to help base my decision yet. Im going to get both eventually but not sure as to which one i want first.

I used to use a Konica FT-100 as my film camera, and the lenses were really nice, and the best part: CHEAP when you can find 'em. I shopped at used camera stores and pawn shops for all my film gear.
