hopefully not stepping on anyone's toes here:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/25646360@N05/2438024267/" title="Skater by MiDaPhoto, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/2438024267_216293c109.jpg" width="333" height="500" alt="Skater" /></a>

the only adjustment i made was to increase the brightness, otherwise it is straight off the camera, no crop.

The shot was handheld, and manually focused (which i usually suck at!)

IMO it's a good pic but it need a little more depth.. try to unfocus the background if you can..

Great catch...I agree with blurring the background a tad bit....maybe even a bit of motion blur....
I got a skatepark near me so im hoping now that the weather has warmed up i want to get out and try to get some of these types of shots

I agree with sistog - too much DOF - but skate parks are tough, there's always a ton of unattractive stuff in the background...

I agree, lower DOF would have helped tremendously here.

Nice shot. I don't think a lower DOF is really needed. Maybe it's good to see something about the environment. It doesn't distract from the main subject.

this was the first day that I really went out into the world with my new 70-200 f/2.8.

if i could do it over again, i might have shot f/4, slower shutter (since 1/800 was probably overkill for stopping the skater's motion), and drop to ISO 100 if i still had too much light. It was very bright out.

my biggest worry (and why should I worry, this is fun right?) was that if i shot near wide open, I'd walk home with a whole bunch of shots where maybe a wheel or a shoe or a hat was in focus but nothing else was.

thanks for all your comments!
