I am a new member and am looking forward to learning more about digital photography as well as helping others when I can. I am not new to photography having used Nikon 35mm film cameras/lenses since I can't remember when. I started playing with digital cameras about five years ago.

I now own a Canon 850 as well as a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3. I've had the DMC-TZ3 for less than a month. After taking some pictures with this camera I started noticing that the file sizes are around 1.5 MB to 2.0 MB. The file sizes of photos taken with the Canon were higher around 3.0 MB to 4.5 MB. (The Canon is a 8 megapixel camera; the Panasonic is 7.2 megapixel.) Why are the file sizes on photos from the Panasonic smaller? Any help would be appreciated!

You answered your own question. The reason to the file size difference is because the megapixels are different.

There is also a difference in the amount of compression applied to the image.
