hoges,
Both have their own qualities: B/W is more intense (would have cropped right and top, to keep hand). Color features subject's wonderful hair and skin tones.
Both could lose BG: darken, blur or both. Still not wanting to twist head to view a photo. Good take.
I think it is improved - the colours don't add much to the original version.
While you are playing with it, how about darkening the background and lightening the girl's skin, to put more emphasis on her as the subject?

I was thinking that too wulf, i believe jiminy used a similar technique in the fix the blown highlights thread in the critique my shot board.

Out of curiousity, what technique did you use to convert this to black and white? Was it just the desaturate option in the hue/saturation box, or did you use channels?

I tend to use greyscale and adjustment layers to do the job, every image is different so are the ways of converting. A lot of trial and error.

But then someone would say that back ground is too dark :D

Do you use the channel mixer? This gives you a lot of flexibility in the final look of the photo.

It's a great shot. It would look great with a little color. I dont know much about it but have heard and seen the duo tone effect and it looks great. Definately uncrop it. Leave the entire hand in it. Then I recommend putting subtle color in the hair eyes and lips. You can try the skin tone also and see if it looks better with a little color or the way it is.

I really like the color one! I think the B&W take away from the pic and the looks of the girl. Her freckles and hair color give it a warm feeling to me. Both are great but I like the color better....

See what it looks like if you really boom the colors, there are good colors in the picture although I don't really like braclet. However, the other colors and the blue eyes will look great.
