"I got it, I got it, I got it, no .. I got it ..... aaaaaaaawwwwww man!"
So this did not go over as well as I had hoped. How to improve shots like this? I took this from a bit off to the side and lined up the beams and backboard leaving the wall lines slanted. Bad? Bad Idea all around and I should not take the camera to the court?

Well the very first thing you probably want to do is make the backboard square to the edges. Then you probably want to brighten it a bit and denoise it as you can.

I would have personally included more of the people (made it more vertical vs horizontal).

actually the first thing you should do is to not take a picture of the walll above the backboard. really who looks up there when you have all the people down below? Or in the case of this picture the lack of people down below....
Point is reframe it next time so that the backboard is near the top of the frame instead of the middle that way you can actually see the players and their reactions.

Got it, thanks. I was following the ball and not looking at the scene at all (was tough while following the ball) but I will redo and try to do both. My 2 year old son and I watch the games at this Gym almost every day.

Great, thanks thinking of framing the board will help for sure.
