My 6 year old Canon printer will cost more to repair than to buy a comparable replacement.

I am completely overwhelmed trying to compare the options available now.

I've seen printers with 6 ink cartridges with 9600x2400 resolution and ones with 8 that claim to have the best color but only have 4800x1200 resolution. Does any of that really matter?

I'd like to print larger format images and I'd like to print on a variety of papers.

I went to the local electronics store hoping to try out a good selection. The only printers they are "pushing" are the "direct form your snap-shot camera" types.

I would appreciate any suggestions on what features really make a difference to the quality of print and how to compare the different features.

I hadn't really considered buying a photo printer, but my wife surprised me with one for Christmas. I got the Canon i9900, and so far I've been thrilled with its performance. She apparently did quite a bit of research on Consumer Reports, etc, before buying this one.

The i9900 will print up to 13 in by 19 in prints. It works best with high grade glossy paper. It uses eight cartridges.
