nice shot! I think you did a great job capturing the action. I think the shot would do better with the surfer more to the right because all the empty space behind him distracts me. The colors look a tad flat but could be fixed later. As for checking exposure before seeing the action, take a few practice shots before hand to check for white balance etc...
