Welcome to another week of What Would You Do!
This week's picture is from Ampersand:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/8123284@N06/2292484646/" title="002 parking meter (by ampersandprime29)"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2420/2292484646_1227e8d703.jpg" title="002 parking meter (by ampersandprime29)" alt="002 parking meter (by ampersandprime29)" width="500" height="375" /></a>
Available Larger (http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2420/2292484646_1227e8d703_b.jpg)
The rules of the game are simple. Use the picture and edit it however you would like, then come back and show us what you did and tell us how you did it. If you would like your photo to be the subject of one of these threads, drop me a PM with a link to the medium and large size of your picture and I will use it in the order that I get it.
Now, let's see what you would do!

First thing I did was to tone map this to bring out the wonderful colors.added a vignette. Once I did that tho, the grass was far too saturated and look like a neon green so i tried burnining it to make it darker. Didnt work.
Next i duplicated the layers and desaturated the entire photo. Then I erased around the meters to bring out the color in the first layer. Increased contrast a tad and cropped
Merged layers. Did a little burning in a couple of areas.

A little touch here and there seemed in order, just to address some issues:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47146451@N00/2346638327/" title="WWYD43 by jiminyClickit, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3255/2346638327_4d8d98a602.jpg" width="500" height="376" alt="WWYD43" /></a>
Flipped original left for right, scanning seems better
- Copied a layer, turned negative, adjusted Hue for darker meters
- Layer was set to Difference mode, 30% Opacity
- Added Gradient layer for darker upper right (Sun flare)
- Separated background from edge of parking lot back, Darkened, Blurred, Desaturated
- Added Vignette to focus attention on meters

Adobe PhotoDeluxe, using some Distort on original:
- Gradually reduced space on right to create a curve
- Used Twirl distortion each direction to suggest vision impairment
- Added Spin blur to suggest brain impairment
- Added this line just to see who really reads this stuff
- Light vignette added to suggest passing out
- Some Contrast, Darken, Saturation

I really do read this stuff! Then I do go to PS and try and do it too :D

When we're not around:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47146451@N00/2347943456/" title="WWYD43C by jiminyClickit, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2400/2347943456_379812db04.jpg" width="500" height="376" alt="WWYD43C" /></a>
Good Selecting practice
Separate meters from background
- Copy/paste on separate layer, flip copy left for right, resize, position
- Add eyes/flags, merge both meters
- Contrast, Saturate
- Blur, Darken, Desaturate background
- Add caption

jiminy, all three of your edits are great! Not only are they all so totally different from one another, but they are well executed, creative, and clever! Thanks for sharing. :)
moonshadow, hi! That's a very cool edit...neat colorization and style. :)

Teewinot, Thanks
Never know what's going to inspire; one meter probably wouldn't have worked. You are kind to comment thus, and if they please, the time is well spent.

Just for the colors brought out:
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/47146451@N00/2347475892/" title="WWYD43B by jiminyClickit, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3153/2347475892_153705efc2.jpg" width="500" height="376" alt="WWYD43B" /></a>
Adding a layer of Negative over first edit, and then swirling it clockwise some, and setting layer to Difference mode, about 40% Opacity.

FloridaMike,
Adding a negative layer can give you all kinds of differences, fun to play with. You can use it to balance light/dark areas, too.

I'm still working on selection techniques and masks. So, I thought it would be fun to "move" the parking meter to a vehicle that is much more worthy of paying for parking than I am!! :)

Here is my meager effort.
Did a bit of copy/ paste, some recolouring resizing, and added another image. Ernie

photoshop cs3:
copied photo to a new layer and kept the original layer the same
applied the diffuse glow filter with no grain
applied the color burn to the layer
applied 80% opacity to the layer
added a curves adjustment layer on top of both previous layers to create a cross processing feel
red and green: raise in highlights, lower in shadows
blue: raise in shadows, lower in highlights
finished.

GOAL: To give it an antique, vintage look.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarahhallphotography/2359050477/" title="What you would do #43 by ~Teewinot~, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2302/2359050477_6411068342.jpg" width="489" height="500" alt="What you would do #43" /></a>
What I did (in PSP XI):
-Cropped in a little on the right
-Added 2 additional texture layers (rust & garage floor), overlay blend, 100 percent opacity
-Merged all layers
-Unsharp mask (radius 75, strength 25)
-Histogram midtones adjustment (-10)
-Desaturation (-70)
-Added picture frame

windrider -- I really like how you brought out the colors and textures of the meters. Especially the pale turquoise.
jiminy - I love all your edits! Funny and talented, you are. (there I go into yoda-speak). The first edit is lovely, flipping the shot really works. I like the mood of it alot.
moonshadow - I recognize the "poster edges," I too am a big fan of that effect.
laepelba - amazing. I never think to do these types of things with my edits!
erniehatt - they proliferated!
thisguynoel - I love how you brought out the background. That is just so wonderful and part of what I wanted from the image too.
teewinot - it looks lovely with the vintage look.
---
Hmmm....now I'm off to see what I can do with the image.
BTW, this shot is from an "interesting" part of Baltimore -- just a few streets from the "block." My daughter and I were there to see a band at a small club. The parking lot also had tons of fascinating graffiti and (intentional) murals. But I was not allowed to use up space on the flash card for that! We had to save that for the bands. : )

Here's what I did:
- levels, contrast
- created layer with cutout filter
- layered original over that at 48% opacity
- cut meter, diner, and red-white&blue sign into separate layers.
- posterized those layers at varying levels
- "healed" out the sticks on the ground
- darkened shadows to emphasize tree shadows across grass.
- selectively desaturated the buildings in the background
- blantanly ripped off jiminy's idea and flipped the image. :-)

Ampersand,
That's a clean look, like you went back and rephotographed the site. Good work.
(Flipping is not copyrighted; I started really noticing the difference it could make after clockdoc began mentioning it in his Critiques.)

Here is my first post to this thread. I use PSE6, and I only know how to do a few things. I am not as gifted as the rest of the folks on the forum, but here goes.
1. Added scalloped edges 2. Sharpened picture 3. Using the magic wand converted parts of the pic to black and white. 4. Deleted some of the shadows using the healing brush - left the fire hydrant red. 5. Cropped photo
