I set the custom settings in the K10D so that when I use my remote, it will focus the automatic lens first. I am disappointed in how that is working. I am trying to do self portraits, and a great deal of them are not in focus when I review them.

The K100D seemed to focus with the remote much better.

Is anyone else having this problem, or found a way to correct it?

From the sound of it, it sounds correct. you could mess with you Autofocus settings if you want and see if you get better results also what kind of background and lighting environment are you using. I have at times set things up manually and just used a remote as a trigger.

I don't think there should be any difference in the way the K10D and K100D work with the remote. Are you getting good focus in other situations?

Thanks oceans and those that replied to this thread. I had overlooked the auto focus feature for remote on the custom menu of my K10. Part of what made me overlook it was that I read on my Pentax remote instructions that it would not focus the camera. That's not true. It works great.

Love my K10.

Auto focus work well with either wired or IR remotes I have worked with both and not had a problem. If you are trying to do self portraits try using center point focusing and not multi segment.

Does the K100D have more focus points? My guess is that the autofocus is doing its job with all the precision and stupidity of a machine and focusing on the wrong thing (have you got an example picture to share).

Personally, I normally use manual focus when taking self portraits. Having a remote is handy because I have as much time as I want to get into the position that I calculated as being the right distance from the camera. Even when using a lens that allows autofocus on my D40 I still find that manually focusing gives a higher success rate.

Nope, same "SAFOX VIII" AF system in the K10D and the K100D. And basically the same back to 2003's *istD (although there's a couple of models in between with stripped-down versions). And the K20D as well, to much wailing and gnashing of teeth on many web forums.

Sounds like you've got it set to auto-AF point select. Pick either centre or manual point selection (the setting is on the wheel surrounding the OK button on the back of your camera) and it will fix your focus issues.
