Hi all,

I am brand spanking new to this and am looking for advice. Here is a photo I took today with my only digital camera (saving for a "real" one, but still want advice).

This is a photo of my trailer hitch and I was trying to capture cold with it. I want to know what you think on the lighting (natural at sunset) and the cropping of the image and angle... thanks!

Hi rlarose:
First let me say that what it counts is to have a "good eye". The camera is not that important, an yourself prove it with this shot. The lightening is good. You don't have any overexposed areas and the detail on the JEEP letters is good. DOF is great too (I will maybe blur a little bit everything but the letters). Angle of the shot works for me. What I particularly like about this one is the associated idea (call it composition if you want) with the brand. You have some big pieces of steel that looks strong and durable just as JEEP pretend to be.
I think you did a great job, and the good thing is that you achieved to show us what you saw.
Great job and hope to see more of your work!

I can't add much to what was already said about the angle, etc. But if you were going for cold, I think you've got it. It looks like salt and muck all over the hitch, and coming from Illinois, I see that every winter! Definitely suggests cold to me.

I agree with all the other points, but I think you probably could have done slightly better with 'cold'. I live in NY. It snows here. It's currently cold here. Right now that hitch screams 'cold'. However, if I were to look at this same picture, not knowing what that salt deposit looked like, sitting in a nice, warm room, my first thought would probably be 'some kind of mud'. It is a Jeep, afterall.

I think if you wanted to go for 'cold', some ice or icicles would do perfectly. Perhaps even a sprinkling of snow on top of it.

Thank you for the great feedback everyone! I really appreciate the input you gave me for this photo. I love the idea of sprinkling snow on it to enforce the idea (I am in New Hampshire, so I have plenty!)

oriolhdz, thanks for the great detail in that reply!
