Okay, I was going to put this in share your shots, but I need to learn, so I am throwing it out for some C&C. Now then, I am learning my camera so I took about 80 pictures of this barn, for a series of them I did not move, put the camera on (I believe) Aperture priority and adjusted it one stop for every shot I took, I changed nothing else. Many were extremely blown out, this is almost the complete other end of the spectrum. I tend to like this this dark, but I want to know what else I can do, what else I can be looking for, what will help this picture. I don't know how to be much more specific because I really want thoughts to take with me when I go out to take more pics. But maybe help with what other settings I should have changed? The barn is across the street from me, so it will be very easy for it to be a subject again. Eventually I want to turn some of the pics into black and white and then sepia, but that is for future experiments. Now for info...Camera: Nikon D80
Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/22
Focal Length: 22 mm
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Bias: 0/6 EV
Flash: Flash fired, auto mode
ISO Speed: 100
Exposure Program: Aperture priority
Maximum Lens Aperture: 38/10
Metering Mode: Pattern
Digital Zoom Ratio: 1/1
Focal Length In 35mm Film: 33
Quality: FINE
White Balance: AUTO
Sharpening: AUTO
Focus Mode: AF-S
Flash Setting: NORMAL
Auto Flash Mode: Built-in,TTL (didn't realize the flash came on till read this)
(not sure if this is too much, or not enough info, hopefully I hit it just about right)
Thanks, Christine

Very nice composition; you got 3 sides of it, which is perfect.

Hi!

I think this is a nice image. It looks a little bit underexposed, so either your ISO needed to be higher or your aperture needed to be wider. However, it has lovely colors and that was easily fixed in Photoshop in my play.

It could go even lighter than this too - but I loved the rich colors so keep it fairly dark to preserve them.

Thanks crazy 88ss, I took from a couple of different locations, I am glad this one seems to work the best. (it was also the easiest to get to! lol)
Kathryn, I like what you have done to this. I too liked the rich colors, but I see how much more you brought out in playing with it. The barn definitly pops a little more, doesn't it. Thanks for your help, and both of your imput.

At first your shot seemed a little busy to me, but I think the clear sky keeps this under control. Nice composition.

When I read your description, I didn't understand why you were getting shots that were blown out until I saw that the flash was firing in your EXIF. I think what was happening is that the camera was keeping the shutter speed between about 1/200s and 1/60s since the flash was up. Because of this limitation, it couldn't adjust the shutter up fast enough to get a correct exposure at very large apertures. Unfortunately, this means that you didn't get to see the change in depth of field that you were probably expecting.

netbymatt, thanks for the information. I am learning the different settings so I wasn't sure what I was expecting by changing the aperture, your posting has helped me understand a little bit more. I have read my manual, but I am still very vague on settings and what they will do, so I did the next best thing, I started playing and remembering or taking notes. I had started in automode on this day, and my flash apparently opened up there and I did not realize it. I didn't even think about it firing, now I know one more thing to keep in mind. I do believe I will be taking another walk one day soon and trying again.

I think you have a great shot. I like what KathrynWilson did to it in photoshop too. Great color and composition.

i think the edited version by Kathryn is a bit better.. the original is a bit drab
wooden barns do make good subjects. they have allot of character

I have this thing for old barns. I love your original shot. I'm like you, I like the darkness of it. The photoshopped version is neat, but looks a little fake. I too forget that my flash has popped up sometimes!
