Hi and welcome to the group. I appreciate your effort to frame your subject with the tire. A couple of things to consider here:
- Because your sister is so close to the tire, she is in the shadow of the tire itself which blocks a lot of light from illuminating her face. Try having her move far enough away so you can see the effect of the light on her face.
- Always be aware of your background, not only in the subject matter it may contain but as in this case the bright area that draws the viewer's eye away from the subject.
- Watch autofocus when framing a subject as the camera may focus on the frame and not the true subject.
- Exposure can be tricky when using such a frame as you have here. However, I suspect the camera's meter was more influenced by the bright background which cause underexposure.
Keep shooting! I'll be glad to help where I can.
As usual Clockdoc has it right.
Any time you shoot in shade against a bright sky like this you are going to give your camera fits. Your camera's sensor just cannot cope with that much light variation and you will get 1) blowouts (areas of pure white with no detail), and 2) your main subject may well be dark.
Shade can be the best place for shooting photos on a sunny day, as you avoid harsh shadows -- but you will get much better photos if you keep the sunlit stuff out altogether when you head for the shade.

Thanks so much, both of you. ^^
I'll work on all this (I suspect actually getting her to stand on the other side of the tire, where the sunlight doesn't clash too much), and try to get my sister to listen to me at least a little.. :p
