What do you guys think about this one and what could I do better from composition to post processing. Thanks.

You could definitely do with losing the elements cluttering up the bottom edge of the image, although don't crop out all that green water, which provides such a rich contrast with the yellow rock of the falls.

You might also want to experiment with cropping a little bit off the top, losing the river that feeds them and making more of the falls.

Added EXIF data.

Wulf Take a look at the pic above now with the crop. Do you think it is over done in post processing?

Also I did a crop of just the falls here....

Thanks for adding the exif data ... I just read the rules and will try to get with the program a little better :)

It would have been better to leave the original picture at the top - otherwise it will be hard to follow the conversation for those who come in later!

Anyway, I did a little playing and came up with a crop in 3:4 ratio that I think looks quite well balanced (attached). Your crop also works but seems a little squeezed at the top to me.

What a beautiful spot . I tried a crop as well , the bush on the left I found it a little distrating . I boosted the contrast and saturation a tad . Not sure what the pros would have used for settings . Did you chose these settings in manual or did you use auto . Just wondering what a slower shutter speed would have been like and a lower ISO . Hope you don't mind my asking this & I hope someone more experianced than I will share that info .

I just wanted to ask how you turned the water off? I live in Oklahoma and have never seen Turner Falls so, so.....it's a trickle! When did you take this?

Yes this shot was taken in manual. I always shoot in manual as I feel it will force me to learn faster but I end up with alot fewer keepers. I have tried shooting in the program modes with virtually the same results as I get in manual so I have stuck with it. I shot this hand held from inside my truck and used the meter to set the exposure. I have some other shots where I tried other settings but dont have access to them right now. Thanks for the different ideas on crops I need to learn how to crop with correct ratio's as I just click and drag the box at this point. Aside from the cropping it seems to be a decent pic based off of yalls comments. I was really worried that I had played with it to much in photoshop.

Also before I took this pic I ran into the castle beside the falls and hit the emergency cut off switch to turn off the water. :) I took this pic on 1-28-08 It is the first time I had been to Turner Falls but I felt like it was running a little slower than normal.

And that is the end of the Novel thanks for reading :D

Manual is cool; since I learnt how to control the camera in that mode (not hard - there aren't that many variables) I have hardly come out of it.

What software do you use for editing? The Gimp has some excellent tools for cropping to whatever aspect ratio you choose, especially in the 2.4 series.

I have tried Gimp but it doesnt run to good on my laptop but I found an old copy of Photoshop 7.0 that I have been using the last few days. It is what I used on my most recent zoo pics and the turner falls pics. So currently I am concentrating on learning 7.0 and then maybe I will upgrade to cs3 or whatever the new version is. I am very lacking in the post process area as I have never messed with layers etc. So far I have just been looking on youtube and finding tutorials and trying them.
