I've been putting together a few shots like these, trying to achieve a cinema / movie scene feel. Focusing heavily on light and color, trying to evoke a feeling out of each one.
The scene is made up of two images, the environment and the object(s).
Im curious about how believable the idea is for you.
Thanks!

Sorry about that!

Hi again eskepe:
I like the photo you picked. About if it's believable or not, for me it is, in the sense that it's a staged photo. I would lobe to see a before and after or post processing tutorial to see how you achieved the final photo. Lightening is amazing. Love the way it covers the boy but lets see the arms. The two fingers screaming like "I'm still alive" is great. All elements, models, objects and lightening play in such way that makes a nice composition. BTW have you think in adding some blood to the picture?
Nice work and hope to see more of your cinema style pictures as other styles too!
Thanks for sharing it!
This would make a great assignment you should pop it into the Suggest Assignment Topics (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=103) thread, or, failing that, it could be a new weekly thing... actually, i might do that myself,
Anyway, to the photo.
I am loving the lighting, the arms reaching out, the sense of not knowing what is in the black area,
How did you light the shot to give such a dramatic frame?
Great Shot! Definately one of the stronger ones from the set.
Did you use the tutorial from Ebin (http://ebin.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/how-to-turn-your-photo-into-movie-like-effect-using-photoshop/) or were you just after trying something new?
ike,
This shot definitely captured my attention, and I think it does work. There's a lot of mystery in the shot, with all the dark and only the arms being visible. I can't tell if it's a real person or not either, kinda looks like a manequin. The shot really works, I love it. One thing that kinda popped up when I saw it, is what it would look like in Black and White.. It kinda gives me a "Film Noir" vibe, and I think B&W may enhance the mystery in the shot.
Good work!
Oh, I forgot to mention, I really like that missing tile. It adds to the atmosphere, and it makes my eyes move in a circle and keeps me in the shot. My eyes go from the arms, to the tile, to the thing on the wall, then back to the arms, creating more suspense. For me at least.

I very much like the concept. A figure in the dark crawling into the light. The mystery of what is to come. The accessories such as the missing tile and the curious chrome bar help set it off.
I think there is just a tad too much dark space to the right. I feel as if I can guess where the feet should be, and the dark space goes beyond that.
In most cinematography shots where anything spooky, mysterious, eerie, creepy, or otherwise dark is happening, I usually notice that everything is rather dark. For me the lighted floor is too light. For a truly cinematographic feel I think the light, or contrast needs to be toned down a bit. I think the idea in such shots is to convey a sense of hope(reaching into the light), but give the feel that all may not be well(the light is not so bright).

I have to agree with FrankenPengie in that much of your shadow detail is lost on my monitor. It may have much more depth in glossy print form. Perhaps use of the HDR technique would help open shadows in a more controlable way. I applaud your concept and encourage you do keep pursuing this concept.

great use of your light and imagination....truly i am impressed by how your mind was working here.....
if by believable you meant to have this image suggest disembodied arms....then i would say no....my eye keeps leading me into the shadow to look for the rest of the body.....
it is a wonderful image and i hope that you continue to stretch that imagination of yours....

Done that (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8195) :) (see the complete list of assignments (http://digital-photography-school.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2182). Actually, it was one of the quieter weeks and most entries were plays on the titles of existing films rather than ones like this, which capture something of the mood instead.

Thought we had, i knew i entered an assignment with movies in the title,
But, i was thinking more of trying to capture the essence, like in these photos or trying out something like in the link i posted, Ebin (http://ebin.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/how-to-turn-your-photo-into-movie-like-effect-using-photoshop/)
I just though it would be good to have an assignment with something more to do with post processing,
Also, seems we are going to be needing more assignment suggestions soon, but what i honestly don't know,

Thanks everyone for your comments. I agree that the darkness on the right may be "too" much. I think I need to correct the levels, because there is more back there.
With these few shots, I was concentrating on a single, powerful light source as the concept, and working the subject into the environment.
Thanks again.
