Hi all- this is my first go at sunsets- please feel free to provide any ideas on composition or technique you feel appropriate.

Oh- the horizon is straight- it's over a sloping plain. :-)

I think it would have been improved if the branches of the trees were more sharply in focus. Unless the clouds were moving fast, you could have used a smaller aperture and slower shutter speed to accomplish that. You might also need to get further back or use a wider angle lens to get suitable depth of field.

Great pointers Wulf- especially using the wider-angle to get a greater DOF. Thanks!
Have you seen the handy online depth of field calculator (http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html). It helps turn general concepts into solid numbers that will help you understand what is possible with the equipment and location you are working with (for the kind of shot you are doing, the hyperfocal distance is probably what you need to figure out).
