now, it's time for me to practice what we've all been preaching all week....

Exposure: 1.6 sec (8/5)
Aperture: f/18
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: -2/3 EV
Flash: Flash did not fire

i had the idea that i wanted to use construction paper for the minimalism assignment....this image is an outtake from that session.....

the set up was my trusty old kitchen island, a 300watt bulb and reflector that were placed low and just outside the top of the frame, my camera and it's tripod....i kept the depth of field as wide as the camera would allow to capture all the torn edges....bracketed for exposure.....

i wanted to keep to a single color and element for this shoot.....the only variances would be in the pattern of the papers and the shadow and highlight of the red.....and i think i did pretty well on that.....but, you may decide differently.....

as always, i question my composition and with a subject like this one i fretted even more.....

so, tell me....how were my decisions?....

thanks

Very interesting abstract! I like the effect very much. Did you experiment with placing the light at different positions to see how it affects the highlights and shadows?

Nice photo peeperita. That blood red is amazing. It keeps me staring for so many seconds. I think is a great choice when you d decided to use a odd number of cut off paper - 5 in this case - I think it works better than it would had work if there was a par number like 4 or 2. But that's my opinion.
In the bigger file it looks awesome in my screen. I think you did a great job for this minimalistic and abstract photo (as said by clockdoc),.

What I would have done in your case is taken advantage of all the set up you did, I would played with less or more paper cuts to see what does the feel express itself.

Nice shot, and thanks for sharing it!

thanks, doc,......and yes, i did.....i originally had two lights set up to either side of the frame, but, then it all looked too flat.....i went back and began twisting my strips of paper gently until i got some rise and fall out of them.....two lights again were too "flat" looking, so i went to one and just rotated the paper until the "hard" shadows were gone...

thanks for looking

peeperita,

If you questioned and fretted, imagine what a Critiquer has to do? It has color and texture, exactly what every other photo has. The difference is that those are usually qualities of a subject. Here you have presented them as the subject. And given your intention (presented well), I can honestly say this is the best photo of torn persimmon paper I have ever seen. Not faint praise, it is done with as much imagination and skill as could be given the minimum of features seen. I have no precedent, so it is perfect in my experience.

Bet you didn't see that coming.

I was surfing by your Paper Set as you replied. I must say that photo called IMG_6581b which has the blue and red papers called my attention too. Liked the composition and the kind of triangle form you got. It looks amazing as a Wallpaper hehehe.
Gratz again for your photo and you paper set!

Without an appreciative listener, it would just be like the old guy in the park talking to squirrels. You did good, I just reminded you.

Great composition, wonderful textures, and just an over all beautiful image.
It reminds me of Asian watercolor landscapes. The simplicity is very zen.

That's too cool. Viewed at this size it at first reminded me of how the sand looks on the beach after a strong wind.

Except or sand ain't red.

thanks, sandie.....when i was wrapping my head around this my first thoughts were of those asian, or are they japanese, paintings where a single color or ink in as few strokes as possible depict a scene...

thanks for looking

peeperita,

For me this photo is a creatively-put-together shot to display minimalism; and I like it. I have to go brush some snow off of a motor vehicle; I will return to study everyone else's comments. The kink in the paper distracts my enjoyment of this image a bit. The shot reminds me of layered topograhy.

Great work!

Peeper -- Lovely work. While there are lots of forms of abstract art, I always gravitate towards the ones that represent a subject while still giving you the sense of the original material. You did that superbly here, as stated by several others. I have no suggestions to improve on the composition.

My only simple suggestion would be that a very restricted light from a very hard angle on either side may have revealed a little more texture in the paper (you would add this to your main light not use it instead). This is sometimes referred to as raking light, and it can do amazing things for texture. I can definitely see the paper texture in the big image on flickr, but it seems like a bit of a tease (more would be better). :)

Thanks for sharing this.

Hi Peeperita, I really like the large (Original) size of this on your Flickr page. Your camera shoots at a high enough resolution to make posters of some of your favorite shots. As someone already mentioned, the surface texture shows up better on the larger image, which would make this a very good candidate for posterizing. Thanks for sharing this shot and your set-up with us. I look forward to your shots every day, as they are always technically correct as well as strikingly beautiful. Keep up the great work.:)
