I just got my 580EXII Speedlite. I was just playing around snapping some shots.
I think it came out well but mickey hated the way she looked in this pic. LOL i don't think its that bad.
40D w/ 18-55mm Kit lens + 580EXII Pointed straight up with Stofen cup
60 f/5.6 ISO 400
PP: Cleaned up the face a little, lighten under the eyes and chin
Did an Acne Glam action @ 20% opacity. Crop, resize, then sharpen.

Mickey's pose looks a little awkward so I can sympathize with her feelings. Technically, you are on the right track. Try to move your subject a little farther away from the wall so that the shadows there will drop down a bit more. Also consider the direction your model is facing with respect to the position of your flash. In this case the flash was illuminating the 'broad' side of her face. Experiment with having the person face in both directions with the flash oriented the same way for both shots. You will see a difference between the two. Try tilting the flash head a little towards the person and not exactly straight up for a better bounce effect. Keep shooting!

Yea, there wasn't really an preparation, i just uploaded the pics and thought this was was half decent. I have some stuff setup in my garage that i plan on playing with this week. (home depot style lighting, Shower curtain and big formboard v-cards) So ill have fun with that.
But i definitly need to practice with my Speedlite some more. Ill have plenty of practice next weekend at a party i am going to be attending.
