I wish I could have been able to get a better angle on this so as to get facial expressions from the kids that were doing the feeding. I was also struggling with focus a bit and harsh midday light. Any suggestions on composition or PP?

I like the lines of your composition which indicates you have a good eye. You were battling extreme lighting ratios here and I suspect your meter was influenced by the bright background areas. Did you consider a little flash fill under these conditions? You timing was excellent! As for focus, what mode are you using with the D70 (matrix, centerweighted or manual?) The camera may have not been able to detect enough contrast in the area you were using as the autofocus spot. Keep shooting!

something I do every now and then if the picture is to bright as a whole is to dupilcate and then make the second layer mulitply. It brings out the colors and darkens it up a bit more. You can slide your opacity to lighten it up more to what ever level you like.
Then if there are areas you want ot remain lighter I go in and erase those areas on the second layer.
Something else you might try as the fence post is right in front of the child is painting over the fence post in such a way that you cant tell. if you need to make the upright post look astho its just shorter you could clone the top of the post next to it.
You certainly were in the right place at the right time. This is priceless

Is it just me or is that the scariest looking tongue you have ever seen?
