Default Dog tired of posing!

First time poster. Just learning and experimenting with different settings. I'm having a hard time getting the colors right with indoor shots, but this one was pretty close. Had the camera on the floor for this one. Although I love his big nose, I would have liked his eyes to be more in focus. Would I just need to change the aperture in order to get his eyes more in focus, or are there other settings I need to adjust as well? I can't get low enough on the floor to see through the viewer, so it's hard to get it focused right on his eyes.

Cannon
ISO 200
Shutter speed 1/60
Aperature f/2.8
Focal Length 50.00
No flash

I absolutely love this shot!! Then again I love dogs. I think it is great. As for focusing on the eyes, yes bumping up the aperture with increase your depth of field. You will need to make other changes by either increasing your shutter speed or your ISO to compensate for the smaller opening. You will end up with more of the image in focus this way.

If you like the DOF and just want the eyes in focus instead of the nose, you could try setting the manual focus to the distance between your lens and the dogs eyes. Otherwise you would just need to focus it a few inches off the floor so you can see. Use a few second timer and set it down. Those are the only ways I know to do it. Thanks again for this shot. It is fabulous!

P.S. Welcome to DPS. I look forward to seeing you around and more of your photos!!

Phil,
Thanks for your suggestions. Never thought to use the timer! I'm still figuring out how to use ap, shutter speed, and ISO all together. It's very confusing to me. Just have to keep experimenting, I guess.

P.S. Tucker IS the best dog in the world.

In this shot, I think the focus is "Perfect" !!! - Focusing on the eyes is just something that you do when you take animal pictures, HOWEVER... there are exceptions that make wonderful photographs... This is one.

For me, and for THIS picture, the Nose is the focus..... as it should be.. That picture is a keeper !!

Welcome....... and tell Tucker I think he's a hansome devil........

I agree with Ottor. I think this is a beautiful shot. I love how I look at the dogs face, and instantly I'm drawn to his nose. I am new to a dslr, and I too am still learning how to adjust settings manually. I try to take similar shots of my dog.

Adorable

It's tough figuring out how to get a dog's face properly in focus. At most distances, depth of field is 1/3 in front of what you are focusing on and 2/3 behind. A dog's eyes are at least 1/2 way back on its head. Something to think about...
