I did have about 6 feet of space behind me, so that may have helped in achieving a totally black background. Plus, cupping my hand over the flash light before and after I was ready to use it prevented any stray light from reflecting off my surroundings.
On my next shot I think I will try a longer exposure and a couple colors!
