The last photo is 'better' composition wise.

2 things when shooting at night with a flash.

1 - use the f/stop to control the brightness of the thing of interest
2 - use shutter speed to control exposure of background stuff

... as for the tree limbs... that 'could' have worked, but here it just doesn't.
