It's really not that bad. You could fix it up quite a bit by just blurring the background in gimp.

I don't think so. In fact I think that you could go even further. Why not push the saturation to the limit and really make it abstract. If it were my image, I would push the colors and contrast until the image
posterizes. I think that would look cool.
