I use LR to import all my photos, direct from card into LR.
I'm at work right now and can't open LR to tell you the menu commands for setup, but if you plug your card reader/camera in, open LR, then down in the L/H corner there should be a button for "Import". Click on that, a window will open with many options for you to choose from for importing, including renaming files if you wish, where they should go, etc etc.
