I dont know that I'm an expert but I do get the exact same effect from one , three or five bracketed exposures ( check out my Flickr) adding more contrast and shadow in post will help to give the depth you need to get good HDR'ish effects . This is a cool shot and no excusing is neccessary , we all do our own thing with the tools available and call it art , no problem there . Cheers .
