I started with a D60 (the D3000 has replaced it, the focus system is better) and I loved it. Camera in the category are easy enough to use if you are starting yet powerful enough if you want to dip your toe a little bit further in this wonderful hobby.
I switch to a D90 when I realized I was always carrying my D60 and I was always shooting in manual. The D90 allow me to change more settings straight from the body instead of going in the menu. Otherwise I would have kept the D60 because I was very please with the image quality.
You can get some example on my Flickr. The Carnival 2009 Set was entirely taken with my old D60.
Hope this help.
