Actions are like macros in MS Office. You create one by turning on the "recorder" and then performing the steps you want the action to remember. When you've completed your last step, you turn off the "recorder". The action can then be replayed whenever you want to perform that series of steps.
Looking through my action, I think I probably got it a bit wrong in my last post. Here is what mine does...
My separate logo file is stored in a directory on my hard drive and it never moves. That's because the action opens that specific file every time I run it. To get my signature and my printed name on separate layers in the new file, I first do the signature part. I turn off the layer with the printed text so just the signature is showing. Then I use "color range" to select just the color of the signature. I copy it (ctrl-c) and select the new file. I then paste it (ctrl-v). A new layer is created in the new file. I then go back to the logo file, turn off the signature layer and turn on the printed text layer and do all the same steps as I did for the signature to create another layer in the new file.
Now going back to the new file, you will have two layers. Set your opacity on each layer so it looks nice.
All these steps can be incorporated into an action so all you have to do is select to run the action and it will all be done for you.
It's probably a bit confusing...I"m not the best at explaining Photoshop!
