As for the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, I bought this lens to upgrade from my original kit lens. I saw a definite difference between the kit lens and the Tamron and the 2.8 really opened up a lot more possibilities. I also have the Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS. Definitely sharper than the Tamron, but also way more expensive. Never having personally used the 28-135, I can't speak to it's abilities, but I'm sure the IS is a nice addition. For me, if I had to choose between IS and 2.8, I'd find the 2.8 more useful. BTW, I still use my Tamron quite a bit. It's great on vacations when I want to travel light. Here are some shots using my Tamron.
I sympathize. Sometimes it's hard to look at your budget and your wants and needs and make a decision. Sometimes I think that by the time I get everything on my wish list, I'll be too old to use them .

thank you for the feedback! hmm i hadnt heard about the ghosting issue. i'll have to look into that a little. good to know w/ the tamron also! ideally i'd love to have the 24-70L but thats a bit pricey right now

do you think the tamron would be suitable for portraits/occassional wedding shoots? i've read it has issues w/ focus "hunting" in low light. have you noticed this? i'll take a look at your flickr page. thanks for the link!
