Noticeable improvement! Like you said, much better eye contact and perspective. Good DoF and sharpness, too.

My main suggestion is to try next time for a more uniform - and therefore less distracting - background. Something like all grass, all trees, a solid and out of focus fence, etc. Having an uncluttered background will make your subject stand out even more.
