Tripod deffinately would help and if you cant get closer then you could do with a zoom lense if you can borrow one preferable one with a fast f-number to help with faster shutter speeds in the dark... and then just the general things higher ISO, lower F-Stop.
If you could get in closer with a zoom or moving closer you could expose for the people and fill your frame. Do you do any kind of meetering for exposure?
