I like where your headed with this I think you have all the details and just need to distill them a bit. My suggestion would be to leave the stem longer and shoot the rose tighter so that there is only darkness and the rose . . . Maybe (if you are not already) use a tripod. I think this would give you just the rose against darkness could be very nice. Of cousre photography is quite personal and you need to take what you want from suggestions and throw the rest away ;-)
