A range finder does no look through the taking lens as a viewfinder. It is more like a point shoot except the viewfinder has a small colored square in it, the colored square moves as you focus. the camera is in focus when the image in the colored square aligns with the regular viewfinder image.

They operate much quieter than SLR as there is no mirror to flip up, Also less giggle for the same reason. There are many other advantages on lenses up to around 100 mm excluding micros. There are also many disadvantages.
