Thanks for the tip - I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to brush up my masking technique in PS - sounds like it could be fiddly...

I understand it was built shortly after the battle of hastings, in 1066, by William the Conqueror but the tower in the photo's wasn't added until approx 1130. The Castle itself lies on the Pilgrims Way (as does Guildford) and apparently William ransacked various towns along the way to Canterbury (including Guildford) but came back later and built the castle.
The tower was believed to have been first used as private appartments for the King, and then later used by the Sheriff of Guildford as a Gaol (Jail). More info here:
