Hi. I'm new to this stuff too, but have learned quite a bit on here and just experimenting. I have the A200 but it's pretty much the same camera. The best advice I can give so far as someone in the same place as you are is: shoot in RAW, as long as you don't mind playing with the images in image data converter. The nice thing is don't worry about messing up the image because if you really make it look awful, you can either hit the "camera settings" button to bring it all back to the original settings or just close the program and hit "don't save." If you don't want to experiment with shutter speed and aperture yet, but want control over all the other functions (more applicable if you're shooting in JPEG mode) shoot in P mode. I don't know if Sony fixed it with the A230, but the A200 seems to not focus very well in AF mode sometimes. I've found that if the subject is fairly close I can actualy focus better manualy and get a sharper image. Could be the lense though and I'm just finding the sweet spot.
Anyway, have fun with it. I am!
