That is a hard one. While I would not consider a D40 a pro camera, people that know nothing might. Further if you slap something like a 70-300VR lens on it they may say its a pro camera, while if you went with a D300 and a 50mm lens they might let you in. There is just no rhyme or reason at many venues. Get the details ahead of time -- many time they consider soly the length of the lens.
