Started by doing the first three steps from the following tutorial:

After using the path/stroke method to outline the bird, I started using the brush tool to touch up the outline and to fill in some various colours. I'm no artist, so I just sort of used shades which I thought help to give an abstract type of look to the bird. Then I created a new image, applied a graidient fill, then dragged the bird line art over to the new image.
