A good way to start that is to switch to Aperature Priority Mode with a shot like this. You choose the aperature you want and the camera will adjust the shutter speed to create the proper exposure. Before you do take the shot, check the speed and make sure you can hand hold the camera without causing any shake or blur. Hope that helps.
