I meant to include this last night but somehow forgot. Maybe try a diffuser. The one from Gary Fong is supposed to be pretty good and should give you a little softer light. I'm really having to retrain my eye. Coming to still photography from video it's such a different beast. I've included a link for you to see what I'm talking about.
