I love these flowers, they are beautiful!
I think that personally I would have tried to get a less distracting background altogether, such as by holding up a sheet of black card. Also, with reference to the DoF question, I do like creative use of DoF but I think it might have worked better in this case with more of the flowers being in focus, using a narrower aperture. However, if your composition was maybe changed so that the flower stem was going diagonally away from you rather than almost flat on, the narrow DoF effect could have a more pleasing impact.
