If I'm heading out into the woods, or swamp area's I bring my boots, and a nice little .380 automatic pistol. Might sound extreme, but we had a Florida panther hit by a car a few miles from my house a year or so ago, and a group of motorcycles ran over a bear just a few days ago. Of course we also have the gators to deal with.

I've got up close, and personal with a few gators, several water moccasins, and a couple Diamondback rattle snakes. Never had to use the gun thou.

So either way, you'll end up shooting an animal one way or the other. Hopefully, it's always with your camera.
