Default Parrots on a row

I was visiting Knuthenborg safaripark on Falster in Denmark and they also had a section with birds. I saw these parrots in a cage where they sat nicely on a row. The only problem was that the cage was build with very thick wire and there was a fence a few feet from the cage. I got as close as possible to the cage - stretch my arms with my powershot in front of me and with aperture of f/3.5 to get the wire invisible - and to get a narrow DOF. I tried to focus on the eye of the bird - as the textbook says.

In addition to the DOF I believe that the wire also gives a kind of blur around the birds face - or is it just me?

I need a hint on what to do better?
