Default Strawberry testing with 50mm f/1.8

Hello! This is my first post. I just recently bought a Canon 20D along with the 50mm f/1.8 lens. This is my first test with my new lens.

50mm f/3.2 1/60s

If I could ask two things of the readers. First of all, how can this image be improved. Composition, color, background, foreground, sharpeness, ect, please all comments welcome. It is my first experience with RAW shooting too comments welcome on that too. (I did a little bit of RAW processing)

Secondly, I would also like advise on how to appropriately use the 50mm lens. As I am noticing, it is a great lens, and very fast. But using it near the f/1.8 stop gives it a really shallow depth of field (like millimeters when really close to subject). How can I make the most of this lens? What kind of photography is best with it? Ect..

Thank you all!
