Default Symmetry and haze

Took a shot of an enthanol train as it rolled through a town near where i live. i wanted a shot of the engines and cars, but a stubborn storm that was rolling in prevented it. still managed to get a shot of the ethanol tankers stretching out of sight. but my question is, what cause the back of the picture to look grainy? i set the camera on auto and shot it. is it the mix of the heat and the haze? or just the wrong camera setting?

Thats a lot of gas
