Seems that you have made a decision to go for a DSLR. I personally think that a DSLR has far advantages then a digital Compact.
I'm using a Digital compact myself for 5 years and I beginning to get bored with the camera. not to say is no good, but just limited in functions. More over, nowadays those entry level DSLR is quite cheap and worth going for it.
As for your lens, the 18-55 should give you quite a good macro shot. Have you tried using this lens for macro shooting ? How's the result like ?
