Sorry to burst your bubble but unfortunately (or fortunately, depends on your point of view) a better camera will not make you a better photographer. I doubt even using a D3 would improve this shot much from where it is if you did the same things.
If you are struggling to see how to improve this shot then I recomend learning about the histogram on your camera (P&S or DSLR, it works the same) as this will help you identify the over exposure. This link is a good one for histograms.
