Do you mean the gradient for the layer mask on the blur layer?

The point of this whole step is to make it look like the pic has a very shallow depth of field. You duplicate the original layer, then give it a good gaussian blur. Watch the background of your pic until it's about as blurred as you like. Next, add a layer mask. Select the gradient tool, and make sure that it's radial, going from black to white. You start from the focal point of the img and drag out. This should result in the focus of the img being pretty sharp and the area around it being out of focus.
